I’m back from the Philippines again. As many of you will know, I’ve been going there every winter for the last few years.
I started in 2012, with a short 3-week stay; 2013 was longer, with a 6-week one. Then in 2014 I went for just under 4 months and in the next two years, just under 5 each, with this last being the longest. Although the last visit was not without its difficulties, I now know that I love the Phils. It seems like the place I always wanted to live but never knew where it was.
I’ve fallen in love with the Philippines
Yes there are social and political problems there, but it’s basically a wonderful place. It’s a tropical paradise with lovely people and more to do and see than you could imagine.
So I’m not happy about being back from the Philippines, but it gives
me time to focus. I’ve been saying I’ll sell up in France for a couple of years, and now I am going to do it. But gosh there’s a hella work to be done! When I got back I discovered that I had carelessly left the tap to the upstairs shower closed and they had -15 degrees here. I had shut off the water and drained the system, all except that one tap. The result was a burst pipe in a really awkward spot. I decided to remodel the shower, rather than just deal with the burst pipe. It took a week but was worth it. I’ve been meaning to do that for years, anyway.
The last six weeks have been bad for the blog and I apologise. I was up country in the Phils, which was fascinating and I’ll post more later about that, but I had no proper internet connection. It became too frustrating to upload. I kept losing the signal part way through.
So instead of getting a bi-weekly account of what was happening, I will have to give you a few longer Trip Reports instead.
Facebook and other social media
I have also decided to scale back enormously the amount of time and effort I put into Facebook. It provides precisely zero reward and doesn’t improve my readership here at all. So I will be doing more short posts here — the kind I would previously have put on Facebook — and linking to my FB account and to Instagram, plus other social media. It is well said that you cannot build a business on someone else’s property and Facebook is essentially a massive scam designed to make money for … Facebook.
I’m not saying goodbye to social media, but if you want to keep up with me, you’ll have to come here.
Because of this, there will be more short posts like this, and even shorter, alongside the longer articles. I will keep doing longer pieces once or twice a week, now that I am back from the Philippines and have a wired connection.
It’s not nice to be back, I must admit; France is cold and the weather is miserable. I was used to 35-40 degrees, and coming back to 8-10 degrees has been horrible. But needs must when the devil drives.
